Modernism is the most defining architectural expression of the 20th century – a movement that transformed built environments around the world in an unprecedented way. Many of these buildings are in need of repair now or their original function is no longer needed. This publication in cooperation with Docomomo explores strategies of rehabilitating works of this era. Architects and art historians discuss challenges in the preservation of Modernist buildings. 24 best-practice examples are highlighted, illustrating various approaches to restoration. Among them, there are unknown gems such as the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon or the stunning house that Juan O’Gorman built for his father in Mexico – interventions guided by respect for the authenticity of the architecture and based on substantial research.

Ana Tostões (geb. 1959 in Portugal) ist Architektin, Architekturkritikerin und Historikerin. Sie war Präsidentin von Docomomo International und Herausgeberin des Docomomo Journal (2010-2021). Sie ist ordentliche Professorin an der IST-Universität Lissabon, wo sie Vorsitzende des Wissenschaftlichen Beirats für Architektur, Leiterin des Doktorandenprogramms für Architektur und Leiterin der Forschungslinie zum Kulturerbe des CiTUA ist. Sie hat einen Abschluss in Architektur (ESBAL), einen Master in Kunstgeschichte (UNL) mit einer Arbeit mit dem Titel Os Verdes Anos na Arquitectura Portuguesa dos Anos 50 (FAUP Ed., 1997) und einen Doktortitel (IST-UL) über Kultur und Technologie in der modernen Architektur (Idade Maior, FAUP Ed., 2015), ausgezeichnet mit dem Preis der X Bienal Ibero-Americana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo. Ihr Forschungsgebiet ist die kritische Geschichte und Theorie der Architektur der modernen Bewegung mit Schwerpunkt auf der weltweiten kulturellen Umsetzung. In diesem Bereich hat sie Bücher und Aufsätze veröffentlicht, Ausstellungen kuratiert und Vorträge gehalten. Sie koordinierte das Forschungsprojekt über die moderne Architektur in Subsahara-Afrika, dessen Veröffentlichung Modern Architecture in Africa: Angola and Mozambique (2014) wurde mit dem Gulbenkian APH Prize 2014 ausgezeichnet. Sie ist Herausgeberin des Buches Cure and Care. Architecture and Health (2020).

Ana Tostões (b. Portugal, 1959) is an architect, architecture critic, and historian. President of Docomomo International and Editor of the Docomomo Journal (2010–2021). Full Professor at IST-University of Lisbon, where she is Architecture Scientific Board Chair, in charge of the Architectural PhD program, and leader of the heritage research line of CiTUA. She has a degree in Architecture (ESBAL), a master’s degree in History of Art (UNL), with a thesis entitled Os Verdes Anos na Arquitectura Portuguesa dos Anos 50 (FAUP Ed.,1997) and holds a PhD (IST-UL) on culture and technology in Modern Architecture (Idade Maior, FAUP Ed., 2015), awarded with the X Bienal Ibero-Americana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo Prize. Her research field is the critical history and theory of Modern Movement architecture, focusing on the worldwide cultural transfers. Within this field she has published books and essays curated exhibitions, and given lectures. She coordinated the research project focused on the modern Sub-Sahara African architecture, whose publication Modern Architecture in Africa: Angola and Mozambique (2014) was awarded with the Gulbenkian APH Prize 2014. She edited the book Cure and Care. Architecture and Health (2020).
