Architecture is a fundamentally future-oriented discipline that seeks to reconcile today’s visions with the realities of tomorrow. Futures, understood as evidence-based spatial projections, are materialized in imaginaries. As collectively and socially constructed frameworks of concepts, models, representations, and narratives, they constitute imaginary worlds within which societies seek to position themselves in the world. They lend meaning to our stories and influence the ways in which challenges are perceived and opportunities are articulated and implemented. At the intersection of architectural practice and academic research, this publication examines the significance of imaginaries and bridges the gap between speculative thinking and applied architectural knowledge.
