On the History of the Austrian Chambers of Civil Engineers and Architects

This book presents the first comprehensive study of the history of the Austrian Chambers of Civil Engineers and Architects and their members, from the establishment of the profession in 1860 to the Civil Engineers Act of 1957. Alongside reconstructing the organizational history of the chambers, it examines their collaboration with the Nazi regime and the fate of those civil engineers and architects who were persecuted.

Selected biographies reveal the scope for individual action within the chambers, members’ career trajectories and disruptions, and the impact of discriminatory policies. A particular concern of the volume is to preserve the memory of those civil engineers and architects who became victims of the Nazi regime.
